We believe that the movies our kids are watching shape their culture. We believe that even if they don’t fully understand them, they internalize these messages into their personalities, values, and beliefs about the world. We believe that the lessons they learn watching these movies are what they go forth into the world and practice.
Some of these movies are absolutely amazing. They’re teaching our kids about fairness, inclusion, standing up for what they believe in, and that it’s okay to be different. But some of these movies are not at all deliberate about the stories they are telling, and they are no longer in keeping with what we want to see in our children’s world.
We AREN’T talking about censorship. We can’t tell you what your kids should watch. But we can tell you what OUR kids watch, and how we feel about them watching it.
The truth is, parenting is a crapshoot, and we’re all probably going to be paying for our kids therapy bills. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make as many deliberate choices about what they’re watching as we can.
